WHO WE ARE

We are a Group of US news organizations with journalists operating in foreign countries. We work together in times of crisis to collectively bargain for the rights of journalists in dangerous situations and open communication with the US government on behalf of the entire industry. Our membership is open to all US independent news organizations with foreign correspondents, provided they agree to the terms of the proposed charter. The council meets every 3 months to discuss the advocacy agenda in addition to crisis response meetings when called. Member organizations of the CPJA will send one representative to attend meetings.

Our coalition has a two-pronged focus: advocacy and crisis response

Advocacy

Lobbying:

The CPJA can come together to lobby the United States government for change when they need it, should they be unable to find the resources they require.

Embassy Work:

Establishing a good faith gesture between US Embassies abroad and the delegates of the CPJA to create a line of direct communication of status of

Advocacy meetings could include:

Endorsing proposed US and international legislation, releasing statements, inviting officials to open discussion forums, and more.

Crisis Response

When a crisis occurs with a journalist from a member corporation, all pool their resources and connections to provide solutions and keep that individual safe, working to preserve journalistic integrity and press freedom everywhere. We consider a crisis to be when an incident occurs abroad, violating any aspect of a journalists safety. When such a crisis occurs, the delegate representing the journalists organisation must call a meeting, present the facts, call for further information on the ground and suggest action to be taken by the council. Members of the council will then present postential solutions then vote on which to pursue.

CHARTER

To become a member of the CPJA, members must sign on to the charter. In an effort to have the rules of this organization be reflective of its members. Therefore, at this stage we propose a charter similar to that of the International Non-Governmental Organization Charter: https://community.icann.org/download/attachments/51413557/INGO_CHARTER_web.pdf?api=v2
This focuses on ten accountability measures the CPJA should look to adopt:
- Human Rights
- Political and Financial Independence
- Transparency
- Good Governance
- Responsible Advocacy
- Participation
- Diversity and Inclusion
- Environmental Responsibility
- Ethical Fundraising
- Professional Management

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Our main body is a council of equal representation with delegates from each news organization who signs our charter. Each delegate is supported by a small staff, and each news organization is responsible for paying their delegate and their direct staff, as well as small yearly dues to pay independent leadership. This includes the President and Board of Directors who will be selected by delegates and the businesses they represent. This group is responsible for long term outreach, fundraising, and other administrative duties.
